On Monday, 30 June 2025, a powerful community event is coming to The Black Culture Centre, 16 Hornsey Rd, London N7 7BP. From 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Arsenal in the Community and Go Africa Community Hub CIC are joining forces to host a Prostate Cancer Walk & Talk, a day for Black men to connect, get tested, and take action on prostate health.
Why This Matters for Black Men
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in England, with over 55,000 new cases in 2023. But for Black men, the statistics paint a more serious picture:
- Black men are two to three times more likely to develop prostate cancer than white men, and twice as likely to die from it.
- One in four Black men in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, double the rate of white men.
- Often, diagnosis happens in later stages, harming survival outcomes.
Yet prostate cancer usually shows few or no early symptoms, meaning screening is vital.
What’s Happening on the Day
- Free PSA Testing
With the support of the Errol McKellar Foundation, attendees can take a free PSA blood test on-site. Early testing significantly improves outcomes and could truly be lifesaving. - Open Conversations & Support
Community leaders, health professionals, and survivors will lead “real talk” sessions where men can ask questions, share experiences, and support each other. - Group Movement & Connected Wellness
Start the day with walking football at the Arsenal Community Hub, followed by group strolls and wellness activities bringing community, movement, and positive vibes together. - Tailored Health Information
You’ll receive information designed for Black men: covering risk factors, prevention strategies, and how to navigate next steps if a test raises concerns. - Food, Community & Connection
Enjoy healthy free refreshments, engage in relaxed conversations, and connect with peers in a welcoming and uplifting space. - Continued Guidance & Resources
Find signposting for GP referrals, NHS screening programs, and ongoing health support services, with clear guidance to the next steps.
A Message That Speaks Loud and Clear
“Your health matters. Your voice matters. You matter.”
This event isn’t just about walking or testing; it’s about community and accountability. It’s about Black men feeling empowered about their well-being.
Trusted by Community & Champions
Recent experiences have shown just how effective community-led testing can be:
- NHS “Man Vans” parked outside football stadiums: Early testing reached thousands, helped reduce screening costs, and detected aggressive cancers early, especially among Black men.
- PSA testing from age 45 is strongly supported by NHS England, especially for Black men.
- Celebrity stories, like Steve McQueen, have inspired men to get tested: he credited early detection for saving his life.
